“Telling It Like It Is”, an intimate look at the life and work of American born painter William Utermohlen, explores his self-portraits before and after his diagnosis with Alzheimer's disease. This film takes us on a journey into Bill's past along with his wife art historian Pat and the discovery of the unique nature of the artist’s late work. This is a story about two unfinished lives, loss and gain and the particular challenges this long term illness brings.
This feature film length documentary by Sabine Kertscher, produced by Open Wings Productions, LLC (New York), is currently in post production.

L'oeil de Verre, a film by Fréderick Compain about the work of William Utermohlen, was aired on Arte Sunday, June 28 at 8 pm (channel 7 in Paris).
This film premiered in Paris this past winter at the Max Linder Cinema on Valentine's day. It was received with great enthusiasm. Patricia Utermohlen spoke beautifully about the making of this film.

For the first time in medical history a patient with Alzheimer's communicates his thoughts and feelings from inside the disease. William Utermohlen (and without doubt he is the only person to have done this) paints the slow and methodical deterioration of his brain.

This is the official website for the work of William Utermohlen, an American artist who worked in London for most of his professional life. He died in 2007 of Alzheimer's Disease. His work represents the most complete and coherent testimony of a patient's experience with the disease.
William Utermohlen was born in Philadelphia in 1933, graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1957 where he studied under Walter Steumfig and continued his studies at the Ruskin school of art in Oxford from 1957-59. He settled in London in 1962 and married the art historian Patricia Utermohlen in 1965. He died from the consequences of Alzheimer’s disease in March 2007.
